Health And Safety Policy
Catford Carpet Cleaning Health and Safety Policy
Catford Carpet Cleaning is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees, customers, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our carpet, upholstery and hard floor cleaning services. This policy sets out our approach to identifying, controlling and minimising health and safety risks associated with our work.
Health and Safety Responsibilities
Overall responsibility for health and safety within Catford Carpet Cleaning rests with company management, who ensure that appropriate systems and resources are in place. Supervisors are responsible for implementing this policy on site, monitoring safe working practices and reporting any concerns. Every employee has a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions, and to co-operate fully with all health and safety procedures and instructions.
Risk Assessment and Safe Systems of Work
We carry out regular risk assessments for all services, including carpet cleaning, upholstery cleaning, rug cleaning and hard floor maintenance. These assessments consider potential hazards such as slips and trips, manual handling, electrical equipment, chemical use, noise and working in customer premises. The findings of risk assessments are used to develop safe systems of work which are communicated to all staff through training and written guidance. Risk assessments are reviewed periodically and updated whenever there are changes in working methods, equipment or legislation.
Chemicals and Cleaning Products
Catford Carpet Cleaning only uses professional cleaning solutions and chemicals that are appropriate for their intended purpose and approved by management. All chemical products are stored, transported, diluted and applied in accordance with manufacturer instructions and relevant safety data sheets. Staff receive training in the safe handling of chemicals, correct use of personal protective equipment and appropriate emergency measures in the event of spills, skin or eye contact, or accidental ingestion. Where possible, we select low-hazard products and methods to minimise risks to customers, staff and the environment.
Personal Protective Equipment
We provide suitable personal protective equipment for employees, including gloves, masks, eye protection, kneepads and protective footwear where necessary. Staff are required to use the equipment provided, keep it in good condition and report any damage or defects immediately. Personal protective equipment is selected based on risk assessments and is replaced as required to maintain its effectiveness.
Use of Electrical and Mechanical Equipment
Our carpet cleaning machines, vacuum cleaners, extraction units and other electrical tools are maintained in good working order and inspected regularly. Faulty equipment is removed from service immediately and reported to management. Staff are trained in the safe operation of machinery, including correct cable management to prevent trips, safe lifting techniques when moving equipment, and the importance of switching off and unplugging equipment when not in use or before carrying out any checks or cleaning. Only authorised and trained employees are permitted to use powered equipment.
Manual Handling and Ergonomics
Many aspects of carpet and floor cleaning involve manual handling, including moving machinery, lifting water containers and handling furniture. To reduce the risk of injury, we carry out manual handling assessments and provide guidance on safe lifting techniques. Wherever possible, we use trolleys, wheels and other aids to minimise heavy lifting. Employees are encouraged to work in a way that protects their back, knees and joints, including taking appropriate breaks and reporting any discomfort early.
Safe Conduct in Customer Premises
Our teams work in a variety of settings, including homes, offices, commercial units and communal areas. Staff must respect each property and ensure that access routes, stairways and working areas are kept as clear and safe as possible. Warning signs are used where appropriate to alert people to wet floors or hoses crossing walkways. We take care to prevent slips, trips and falls by managing cables, hoses, tools and equipment in a tidy and organised manner. At the end of each job, the work area is checked to ensure it is left clean, safe and free from hazards.
Training, Information and Supervision
All new employees receive health and safety induction training, including an explanation of this policy, emergency procedures and safe working practices relevant to their role. Ongoing training is provided when new equipment, chemicals or methods are introduced, and refresher training is arranged as needed. Supervisors monitor working practices on site, provide guidance where necessary and reinforce safety standards. We keep records of training and review them periodically to identify additional needs.
Accident, Incident and Near Miss Reporting
Catford Carpet Cleaning encourages open reporting of all accidents, incidents and near misses, no matter how minor they appear. This enables us to investigate underlying causes and take corrective action to prevent recurrence. All reported events are recorded, reviewed by management and, where appropriate, discussed with employees to agree improvements. Where injuries occur, we will provide first aid support where trained staff and facilities are available, and arrange medical assistance if required.
Health and Wellbeing
We recognise that the health of employees can be affected by both work-related and personal factors. We aim to manage workloads sensibly, provide adequate rest breaks and support staff in raising any health concerns that may affect their ability to carry out their duties safely. We do not tolerate bullying, harassment or abuse in any form, and we promote a culture of respect and co-operation on all sites.
Fire Safety and Emergency Procedures
When working on customer premises, our staff familiarise themselves with available fire exits and any site-specific emergency procedures. We ensure that our own equipment and activities do not obstruct escape routes or compromise fire safety. Employees are trained to act promptly and calmly in the event of an emergency, prioritising the safety of people on site.
Continuous Improvement and Review
Catford Carpet Cleaning is committed to continuous improvement in health and safety performance. We review this policy regularly to ensure it remains suitable, effective and in line with current legal requirements and industry best practice. Feedback from employees and customers is welcomed and considered as part of this review process. Any significant changes to our operations or services will prompt a reassessment of relevant risks and control measures.
By working together and following this Health and Safety policy, Catford Carpet Cleaning aims to deliver high quality cleaning services while protecting the wellbeing of everyone involved.
